An intense solar flare erupted on August 1st, ejecting tremendous amounts of energy into space. A significant amount of this energy is coming toward the Earth, and should be affect our planets upper atmosphere over the next few days. As a result, the aurora may be quite active. Our weather is forecast to feature a variety of cloud cover over the next two nights. Those fortunate enough to have mainly clear skies may well be able to experience several brilliant auroral displays.
The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center is responsible for making forecasts of space events that may impact us here on Earth.
