...EXPERIMENTAL USE OF EXTREME COLD WARNING PRODUCT TO START...

BEGINNING MONDAY...JANUARY 10...2011...AND CONTINUING THROUGH APRIL
15...2011...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICES IN THE DAKOTAS AND
MINNESOTA...WILL BEGIN ISSUING AN EXPERIMENTAL EXTREME COLD WARNING
PRODUCT.

OCCASIONALLY...TEMPERATURES FALL WELL BELOW ZERO WITH LITTLE OR NO
WIND. IN THIS CASE...THE WIND CHILL TEMPERATURE IS THE SAME OR
SIMILAR TO THE AIR TEMPERATURE AND ISSUING WIND CHILL PRODUCTS MAY
SEEM INAPPROPRIATE SIMPLY BECAUSE THERE IS NO WIND...WHILE THE
DANGEROUS COLD CONDITIONS REMAIN. IN THESE CASES... WHERE IT IS
DANGEROUSLY COLD BUT WINDS ARE LIGHT...AN EXTREME COLD WARNING WILL
BE ISSUED.

DEFINITIONS...

WIND CHILL ADVISORY...WIND CHILLS 25 BELOW ZERO TO 39 BELOW WITH 5
MPH OR HIGHER WIND SPEED.

WIND CHILL WARNING...WIND CHILLS 40 BELOW ZERO AND COLDER WITH 5
MPH OR HIGHER WIND SPEED.

EXTREME COLD WARNING...AIR TEMPERATURE 30 BELOW ZERO AND COLDER WITH
WIND SPEED UNDER 5 MPH.

IN ALL OF THESE CASES THE ABOVE CRITERIA WOULD NEED TO BE MET OVER A
WIDESPREAD AREA...NOT AN ISOLATED LOCATION...AND FOR A SIGNIFICANT
AMOUNT OF TIME...AT LEAST SEVERAL HOURS.
