Did you ever wonder who is responsible for issuing warnings and watches that interrupt your favorite sporting event or soap opera? Well, it is your National Weather Service (NWS), and here is your opportunity to come and meet us and see what we do every day!
On Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 10am until 3 pm, the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, ND will host an open house and everyone is invited! We are located at 4797 Technology Circle, Grand Forks, ND 58203, just south of University Avenue to the west of Interstate 29. The main parking area will be at the USDA building just south of the NWS. Restrooms will be available at the Grand Forks Parks District building to the west of the NWS.
Your NWS in Grand Forks will have many displays and demonstrations explaining what we do on a daily basis to help protect you. We will explain who we are and how we issue forecasts with our gridded database, how data is disseminated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You will also learn about a new initiative called "Weather Ready Nation". You will get to see our operations area in action with meteorologists making forecasts and answering your questions. You will see all the components that make up a National Weather Service Office, in addition to other entities that play an important role in our mission, the protection of life and property.
Organizations that will be participating include the Salvation Army, Red Cross, Civil Air Patrol (CAP), the ND State Climatologist and University of North Dakota Atmospheric Science Department. The Grand Forks Air Force Base Weather Unit will have a mobile weather unit to demonstrate how weather observations are made in the field. In addition, storm chasers will be on hand to explain how they chase tornadoes.
We will also have a drawing for a free rain gauge and other handouts about the NWS.
We look forward to meeting you on September 17, so save the date and spread the word.
