October 2011 off to a record warm start

Based on preliminary data for the Fargo and Grand Forks areas, the first six days of October are - as many have suspected - extremely warm. As of last night, the average temperature for the Fargo area in October has been 70.3 degrees, which is 19.3 degrees above normal. This is the warmest start of an October since 1914. Similarly, at the Grand Forks Airport and the UND/NWS climate station, the first 6 days have shattered the previous record. At the Grand Forks Airport the 67 degree average temperature is 18.0 degrees above normal, and well above the previous record. For the UND/NWS climate station the 66.3 average temperature is 16.3 degrees above the average.

Today will likely be the last of the extremely warm days as a cold front will drop temperatures to more early October averages for the weekend and into next week.

Below are tables for the Fargo Area, the Grand Forks Airport and UND/NWS climate station. This data is preliminary and may change slightly after the official data are published by the National Climate Data Center. The data is provided by the NOAA Regional Climate Center Acis system.
