18 days of frigid weather...and still counting!

Temperatures across the National Weather Service Sioux Falls County Warning Area have been quite cold for over two weeks now...and more cold weather is expected through Thursday. Friday looks to bring temperatures warming into the mid 20s to low 30s, but it may come with a little light snow.  The cold temperatures have brought well below normal temperatures to the area since January 27th.  February 11th was the only day with close to or slightly above normal temperatures. A look back at the weather records shows that 18 days of temperatures with daily averages below the upper 20s is not uncommon in this area. The extent would have to get closer to 30 days to get into the top ten longest spells of cold temperatures.

For Sioux Falls, daily average temperatures have averaged 4.2 degrees since January 27th. The only day that had a daily average temperature above normal was February 11th, when a high of 26 and a low of 13 brought a daily average of 20 degrees. This was 1 degree above the normal of 19.  All of the daily averages have been below 21 since January 27th.
 The longest number of days that Sioux Falls has had daily averages below 21 was 41 days, starting on the 13th of  January 1936. The daily averages during that period averaged -4.6 degrees. The last time Sioux Falls had 18 days of daily averages below 21 degrees was in 1993, starting on the 11th of February.

For Huron, daily average temperatures have averaged 3.3 degrees since January 27th. The only day that had a daily average temperature close to normal was February 11th, when a high of 21 and a low of 13 brought a daily average of 17 degrees. This was 3 degrees below the normal of 20.  All of the daily averages have been below 18 since January 27th.
 The longest number of days that Huron has had daily averages below 18 was 43 days, starting on the 30th of  December 1936. The daily averages during that period averaged 1.3 degrees. The last time Huron had 18 days of daily averages below 18 degrees was in 1993, starting on the 11th of February.

For Mitchell, daily average temperatures have averaged 6.9 degrees since January 27th. The only day that had a daily average temperature closer than 4 degrees below normal was February 11th, when a high of 26 and a low of 15 brought a daily average of 21 degrees. This was equal to normal.  All of the daily averages have been below 22 since January 27th. The longest number of days that Mitchell has had daily averages below 22 was 65 days, starting on the 20th of  December 1977. The daily averages during that period averaged 4.6 degrees. The last time Mitchell had 18 days of daily averages below 22 degrees was in 2004, starting on the 31st of December.

For Sioux City, daily average temperatures have averaged 8.4 degrees since January 27th. The only day that had a daily average temperature above normal was February 11th, when a high of 33 and a low of 18 brought a daily average of 26 degrees. This was 2 degrees above the normal of 24.  All of the daily averages have been below 27 since January 27th.
 The longest number of days that Sioux City has had daily averages below 27 was 59 days, starting on the 23rd of  December 1978. The daily averages during that period averaged 4.8 degrees. The last time Sioux City had 18 days of daily averages below 27 degrees was in 2003, starting on the 10th of January.
