A dry May across the region sets a record

May 2006 will rank among the driest on record in several portions of southeast South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa and northeast Nebraska.  Lakefield, Minnesota had the driest May, while it was one of the 5 driest Mays on record for Sioux Center, Iowa, Wakefield, Nebraska, and Sioux City Iowa.  In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, it was the 8th driest May on record.

Rainfall data is still being compiled from around the region.  As more data becomes available, an updated message will be sent if other cities had one of the 10 driest years on record.
