Severe Wind Gusts Affect Area on Thursday Evening

I
n response to cold air aloft and a weak disturbance rotating through the region, isolated to scattered thunderstorms developed across eastern South Dakota in the late afternoon and evening hours. Very dry air in the low to mid levels of the atmosphere created a situation where evaporative cooling with developing precipitation would support development of strong downdrafts in storms, common to events in the western high plains. One cluster of thunderstorms developed southwest of Sioux Falls around 6 pm, and produced brief wind gusts of 55 to 65 mph, but only light amounts of rainfall across the northwestern portions of Sioux Falls, including Joe Foss Field. As this storm cluster weakened, another area developed across the James Valley, intensifying while heading east toward the Brookings area. Strong winds in excess of 58 mph produced tree damage across areas of Brookings county, extending through Lincoln and into northern Lyon County. In this case, weather spotters also observed a phenomenon known as gustnadoes, one between Brookings and Bruce, and another northeast of Elkton. A gustnado is localized rotation which develops along the strong outflow gust front.

Below are reports of severe wind gusts from Thursday evening.
