Sunshine Equipment to be removed at Sioux Falls

...SUNSHINE SENSOR AT SIOUX FALLS WILL BE DEACTIVATED
   ON OCTOBER 1 2009...

BEGINNING OCTOBER 1 2009, DAILY MINUTES OF SUNSHINE REPORTED IN THE
SUPPLEMENTARY CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA MESSAGE (SCD), WILL BE
DISCONTINUED.  SIOUX FALLS PRODUCTS: DAILY CLIMATOLOGICAL SUMMARY
(FSDCLIFSD) AND PRELIMINARY MONTHLY CLIMATE DATA (FSDCF6FSD), WILL
ALSO BE AFFECTED.

THE SUNSHINE SWITCH WHICH MEASURES MINUTES OF OBSERVED SUNSHINE IS
NEARLY 60 YEARS OLD MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN AND CALIBRATE.
THE SENSOR AT SIOUX FALLS WILL BE REMOVED FROM SERVICE ON OCTOBER
1ST.

THERE ARE OTHER SOLAR RADIATION RECORDING STATIONS THROUGHOUT THE
COUNTRY WHICH HAVE BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO MEASURE SOLAR RADIATION
USING EQUIPMENT WHICH IS CONSIDERED MORE ACCURATE AND RELIABLE. ONE
SUCH STATION IS LOCATED NEAR SIOUX FALLS AND IS PART OF OUR NATIONS
CLIMATE REFERENCE NETWORK (CRN).

SOLAR RADIATION DATA FROM THIS NEWER AND MORE MODERN SENSOR IS
AVAILABLE FROM THE NOAA NATIONAL CLIMATIC DATA CENTER (NCDC), FOR
THE NCDC CLIMATIC REFERENCE NETWORK (CRN), AND THE NOAA EARTH
SYSTEM RESEARCH LABORATORY (ESRL) SURFACE RADIATION NETWORK
(SURFRAD).
