A Cloudy Month Across the Region

October has been an unusually cold and wet month across the region.  With the cool weather has been an unusually large number of cloudy days.  The National Weather Service defines a cloudy day as one in which the average amount of the sky covered with clouds is over 75% during the day.  A clear day is one in which the average sky cover is less than 35%.

Going back to October 2004, there had only been 6 months in which there were more than 10 days that were cloudy in Sioux Falls.  In Sioux City, there had been only 3 months in which there were 10 or more days that were cloudy.  Over the same time period, Sioux Falls has only had 3 months with fewer than 10 clear days.  Sioux City has only 2 months with fewer than 10 clear days.  This year, both Sioux Falls and Sioux City have had 15 cloudy days - making for the most cloudy month since October 2004.

Not surprisingly, with all of the cloudy days, there have not been many clear days in either city.  For Sioux Falls, there was only 8 clear days while in Sioux City there had been 9 clear days.  The fewest number of clear days recorded in each city was in January 2005 when Sioux Falls had 7 clear days and Sioux City had 5 clear days.
