Records may be Broken on Christmas Day

With the impending major winter storm this week, questions arose about record snowfall on past Christmas Days. The table below shows the top five snowfall amounts and the record snow depths on Christmas Day for Sioux Falls, Sioux City, and Huron, along with the years these records were set. Forecasters are predicting snowfall amounts to possibly exceed these records. On Christmas Day alone, 9.0 inches are expected for Sioux Falls, 9.4 inches are expected for Sioux City, and 6.8 inches are expected for Huron. With snow already on the ground in each city, snow depth records may be surpassed as well. As of 12 PM CST on December 23, 2009, Sioux Falls had 5 inches of snow depth, Sioux City had 6 inches, and Huron had 4 inches. Since more than a foot of snow is forecasted for the entire county warning area, snow depth records may be broken.
