Meteorological Summer Precipitation Maps

The maps below were created using preliminary precipitation reports. Rainfall amounts have been interpolated and may not necessarily be representative of actual rainfall amounts.  To view actual measured rainfall amounts from around the area, please click here.




The preceding map indicates the average rainfall during meteorological summer. Meteorological summer is considered from June 1st through August 31th.  Average rainfall during meteorological summer varies from around 8 inches in south-central South Dakota to near 15 inches in portions of northwest Iowa.




This map above indicates the amount of precipitation that fell during meteorological summer this year. Rainfall amounts varied from as little as 12 inches of rain to as much as 26 inches.   


This map shows this years departure from normal precipitation for meteorological summer. Many locations were well above normal this summer, with rainfall totals 10 to 15 inches above normal.
