Winter Storm to Impact the Area Today and Tonight

Graphical depiction of the weather story for today.

A winter storm will affect much of the region today and Tuesday, with widespread snow and blowing snow spreading from the western Dakotas this morning, into Minnesota later today. Areas from far southeast South Dakota into southwest Minnesota may see a period of light rain, or possibly light freezing drizzle this morning before changing to snow this afternoon. Northwest winds will increase to 30 to 40 mph following the passage of a cold front. These strong winds will persist into Tuesday, and will produce areas of blowing snow. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings have been posted for much of the area today into Tuesday. Snowfall amounts are expected to range from from a couple of inches near the Missouri River Valley, to near 6 inches over northeast South Dakota and into the northern portions of the Buffalo Ridge in southwest Minnesota. Northwest Iowa should remain warm enough to see mainly rain through the day today, with some light snow accumulations possible tonight.
