Severe storm reports from July 1, 2011

A cluster of severe thunderstorms brought wide spread wind damage to portions of southeast South Dakota and northwest Iowa on Friday, July 1.  The most prolific storm was a high precipitation supercell that developed just northwest of Sioux Falls and tracked rapidly northeast through southwest Minnesota. Widespread winds in excess of 70 mph were reported in several communities including Wentworth and Flandreau in South Dakota and Ruthton, Tyler, and Marshall in Minnesota.  The vicious winds snapped trees up to 2 feet in diameter and did damage to several buildings.  In some places, the winds were accompanied by hail as large as tennis balls that enhanced the damage.

Below is a map showing the location of the reports received so far by the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.  Below the map is listing of all of the reports.
