Odds of a White Christmas

The time has come to ask the annual question, "Will we see a White Christmas?"  After the past 4 years, which featured very snowy Christmas seasons, one would think that a white Christmas is much more common around this area than it truly is. Historically, as seen in the data below for Sioux Falls, Sioux City, and Huron, the chance of a white Christmas (defined as snow depth of 1 inch or more measured at 6 am on December 25th) is only slightly better than 50/50. Unfortunately, for those dreaming of the White Christmas made famous by Irving Berlin and Bing Crosby, this year looks to favor the "brown" side of the scale, with little if any snowfall expected between now and Christmas Day.
