January 5 Afternoon Temperatures Smash Record Highs

Record warmth occurred across the area again on the afternoon of January 5.  In fact, almost ideal conditions for warming allowed for temperatures to reach their all-time January highs at Huron (65 - previously 64 degrees on 1/19/1900) and Mitchell
(68 - previously 67 degrees on 1/24/1981 and 1/29/1931).  Many other sites had temperatures reach the third or fourth warmest for January.  What is unique and most impressive about the record warmth of January 5 is that records were not only broken, but exceeded by a tremendous amount, as much as 13 to 17 degrees warmer than the previous warmest on record.
