Spring Flood Outlook

Due to the on-going drought conditions across the area, the Spring Flood Outlook shows below normal chances of flooding across most of southeastern SD, southwestern MN, northwestern IA, and northeastern NE. The only areas with normal to above normal chances for hitting flood stage are on parts of the Big Sioux River, mainly in Brookings and Moody counties, and on the James River from north of Huron through Mitchell. The increased flood chances in these areas is due to the heavier snows that have fallen across northeastern SD and southeastern ND  in the past 4 to 6 weeks, along with deep frost in the soils that will lead to more runoff from the snowmelt and less infiltration. All areas have below normal chances for moderate or major flooding.

Images showing the chances for minor, moderate, and major flooding across the entire Missouri River basin can be found at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/mbrfc/?n=new_outlook.
