March 2, 2014: Coldest March High Temperatures In Grand Island, Hastings Since 1948

Needless to say, the first few days of March 2014 will not soon be forgotten for bitterly cold temperatures. In fact, at both Grand Island and Hastings it was the overall-coldest first two days of March on record based on the average daily temperature, with records dating back 107-118 years. The peak of bitterly cold air arrived on Sunday, March 2nd, when high temperatures across nearly the entire NWS Hastings coverage area only topped out between 4-11°. At Grand Island and Hastings, both official temperature stations achieved the rare feat of tying or breaking BOTH the daily low temperature record AND the daily coldest high temperature record on the same day! Grand Island (Central Nebraska Regional Airport):

The March 2, 2014, high temperature at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island only climbed to 6°. This eclipsed the previous record-cold high for the date of 10° in 2002. The "normal" March 2nd high temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 45°.

  • This was the second-coldest high temperature ever recorded on ANY day in March, coming in only slightly "warmer" than the March record of 4° on 3-10-1948!

- The March 2, 2014, low temperature at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island fell to -5°. This tied the existing record-cold high for the date of -5° in 1960. The "normal" March 2nd low temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 23°.

  • The last time a low temperature was this cold on any day in March was not all that long ago back in 2002, when it tumbled to -11° on March 3rd.  
  • The coldest low temperature on record for any day in March is -21° on March 4, 1960

Hastings (Municipal Airport):


The March 2, 2014, high temperature at Hastings Municipal Airport only climbed to 7°. This eclipsed the previous record-cold high for the date of 11° in 2002. The "normal" March 2nd high temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 45°. 

  • This tied with 3-5-1920 for the second-coldest high temperature ever recorded on ANY day in March, coming in only slightly "warmer" than the March record of 3° on 3-11-1948!

- The March 2, 2014, low temperature at Hastings Municipal Airport fell to -5°. This tied the existing record-cold high for the date of -5° in 1913. The "normal" March 2nd low temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 24°.

  • The last time a low temperature was this cold on any day in March was not all that long ago back in 2002, when it tumbled to -9° on March 3rd.  
  • The coldest low temperature on record for any day in March is -13° on March 11, 1948

March temperature records at Hastings date back to 1907, and are based on NWS Cooperative Observer reports between 1907-1995, and on the automated ASOS at Hastings Muncipal Airport since 1996.
