May 17, 2014: Latest Spring Freeze In Decades at Grand Island, Hastings

Saturday, May 17, 2014, marked the 5th-consecutive day that much of the  NWS Hastings coverage area dropped into the 30s for low temperatures (with some northern sites such as Ord and Greeley even dropping into the 20s on a few of these mornings!). At Grand Island, this was the first time on record that a 5-day spring streak of sub-40° lows happened this late into May, and at Hastings it was only the second occurrence on record!  In addition, at both Grand Island and Hastings the low dropped to 32° on the 17th, marking the latest spring freeze in several decades. The details follow below...


Grand Island (Central Nebraska Regional Airport):

The May 17, 2014, low temperature at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island bottomed out at 32°. This eclipsed the previous record-cold high for the date of 33° in 1930. The "normal" May 17 low temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 50°.

  • This was the latest spring occurrence of a freezing-or-colder temperature in Grand Island in 51 years, since it dropped to 29° on May 22, 1963. 
  • This was the 8th-latest spring freeze on record in Grand Island. The latest on record was 26° on May 29, 1947. May temperature records at Grand Island date back to 1896.
  • This was the first time on record that Grand Island observed 5-CONSECUTIVE DAYS of low temperatures below 40° that started on or after the date of May 13! The previous record was 4-consecutive days from May 14-17, 1945.

Hastings (Municipal Airport):


The May 17, 2014, low temperature at Hastings Municipal Airport  bottomed out at 32°. This eclipsed the previous record-cold high for the date of 35° in 1945. The "normal" May 17 low temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 51°.

  • This was the latest spring occurrence of a freezing-or-colder temperature in Hastings in 67 years, since it dropped to 29° on May 29, 1947. 
  • This was the 3rd-latest spring freeze on record in Hastings. The latest on record was the aforementioned 29° on May 29, 1947. May temperature records at Hastings date back to 1907, and are derived from NWS Cooperative Observer reports between 1907-1995, and on the automated ASOS at Hastings Muncipal Airport since 1996.   
  • This was the only the second time on record that Hastings observed 5-CONSECUTIVE DAYS of low temperatures below 40° that started on or after the date of May 13! The first time this happened was from May 17-21, 1915 (99 years ago).
