Sep. 1-16, 2014: 2nd-Coolest Start to September On Record at Grand Island

It should come as no surprise that the "cumulative coolness" that occurred in early-mid
September 2014 within the local area achieved some historical
significance versus
past climate records for the first half of September.

Focusing solely on Grand Island Central Nebraska Regional Airport, where temperature
records date back 119 years to 1896:

Based on calculations of the average daily temperature between Sep. 10-15, 2014, (which is an average
of daily highs and lows), Grand Island recorded its coldest non-overlapping 6-day stretch during the
FIRST HALF of September in 25 years, since 1989. It also tied for the 3rd-coldest such stretch on record.
Please note that this stipulation of "non-overlapping" days eliminates listing multiple stretches from
the same year that might include some of the same days.

Following below is the ranking of the coolest, non-overlapping 6-day stretches on record
that occurred between the dates of Sep. 1-15, based on average daily temperature:

..GRAND ISLAND CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT..
(TEMPERATURE RECORDS DATE BACK 119 YEARS TO 1896)

1)  49.9 DEGREES...SEP 8-13, 1898
2)  51.8 DEGREES...SEP 10-15, 1989
3)  52.6 DEGREES...SEP 10-15, 2014
     52.6 DEGREES...SEP 5-10, 1929
5)  54.5 DEGREES...SEP 10-15, 1970

Put another way, from Sep. 10-15, 2014, Grand Island temperatures averaged a notable 13.8 degrees
below normal (and 18.3 below normal during the coldest 3 of those 6 days from the 11th
-13th).

In addition to the particularly cool 6-day stretch listed above, Grand Island
also tied for its 2nd-coolest first half of September on record through the first 16 days,
with an average temperature of 61.4 degrees (6.8 degrees below normal). This was the overall-coolest
first half of September since 1993 (see below).

Following below is the ranking of the coolest first 16 days of September on record
(Sep.1-16), based on average daily temperature:

..GRAND ISLAND CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT..
