Jan. 26-28, 2015: Grand Island, Hastings Observe the Warmest Stretch of January High Temps In 28-34 Years

While having a day or two of 60+° high temperatures in South Central Nebraska during January is not all that unusual, it is quite rare to have THREE-CONSECUTIVE JANUARY DAYS that reach the mid-upper 60s. However, that is exactly what happened Jan. 26-28, 2015 in places such as Grand Island and Hastings.

Farther south, some places near and especially south of the state line in North Central Kansas were even warmer, reaching the 70s or even low-80s on these three days! For example, the NWS cooperative observer located 4 miles WNW of Plainville, KS reported incredibly warm highs of 71°, 83° and 72°. The high of 83° on the 27th was the outright-warmest January temperature on record at Plainville, where records date back 110 years to 1905!

Getting back to the Nebraska side of the local area, although only one of the three days (the 28th) broke/tied the daily high temperature record at Grand Island and Hastings, the overall-warmth of the three January days was something not seen in 28-34 years! See below for Grand Island and Hastings details...

Grand Island (Central Nebraska Regional Airport):

The Jan. 28, 2015 high temperature at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island reached 68°.  The "normal" Jan. 28 high temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 36°. January temperature records at Grand Island date back 119 years to 1896.

  • The 68° high on the 28th shattered the previous record for the date of 63° set back in 1986. The last time Grand Island observed a warmer January temperature was only three years ago, when it climbed to 69° on Jan. 30, 2012.
  • The most impressive aspect of this warm stretch was that three-consecutive days from the 26th-28th reached the mid-upper 60s, which is a rather unusual multi-day warm stretch for January. The 3-day average high temperature was 65.0°, which was the 3rd-warmest three-day stretch of January high temperatures on record, trailing only a 67.0° average from Jan. 22-24, 1981 and a 65.3° average from Jan. 11-13, 1987. In other words, it had been 28 YEARS since Grand Island experienced a three-day stretch of afternoon high temperatures warmer than Jan. 26-28, 2015.
