2008 Climate Review

The year 2008 was an impressive year for both categories of temperature and precipitation throughout central and south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas.  Annual average temperatures were below normal across the board...and 2008 precipitation numbers ended up well above normal...and over one-and-a-half times above the normal annual average at Gothenburg...Phillipsburg and Smith Center.  Many locations broke into the Top Ten coolest and wettest years in over 100 years.

Temperature

Greeley experienced one of the coldest annual average temperatures regionally...and even though it was the coldest year since 1997...2008 finished as the third coldest year of record for Greeley based upon records dating back to 1907.  It turned out to be the coldest year of record for Beaver City since 1894...Superior since 1902...and Smith Center since 1912.  Those breaking into the second coldest record years were...Hastings since 1907...and Phillipsburg since 1965.  It was also the third coldest year at Hebron since 1893.  For Grand Island and Kearney...Grand Island tied with 1909 as the 21st coolest year since 1895...and Kearney tied with 1960 and 1972 as the sixth coldest year of record since 1901.
