April 2009 Weather Summary

April of 2009 featured average monthly temperatures near normal at Grand Island and Kearney.  The average monthly temperature at Hastings was 1.2 degrees below normal.  Monthly precipitation averaged near normal at Grand Island, but was 0.19 inch below normal at Kearney, while Hastings saw a greater precipitation deficit of 1.14 inches.  The month began very active the weekend of April 4th when a whole gamut of weather occurred, including severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, extreme winds and snowfall.  Severe weather was more sporadic the remainder of the month.  The occurrence of tornadoes was limited to April 4th.  The largest hail for April occurred on the 26th when hail the size of golf balls fell five miles northwest of Alexandria.  Rain and snow on the 4th and 5th produced the first round of precipitation for the month, while additional periods of widespread rainfall occurred the 17th and 18th, and again the 29th through May 1st.
