June of 2009 began with cool temperatures for the first half of the month at Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney, NE.  Temperatures rebounded during the latter half of June with readings returning to the 80s and 90s for highs.  The highest maximum temperatures for the month occurred on June 23rd where the high temperature reached 98 in Grand Island, 97 in Hastings, and 95 in Kearney.  Due to the cool first half of the month, overall monthly temperatures ranged from 1.3 to 1.6 degrees below normal for the tri-cities.   Rainfall occurrence was frequent at Grand Island and the airport received a total of 8.27 inches, which is 4.55 inches above normal.  Hastings precipitation totaled closer to normal with 3.95 inches falling, or 0.36 inch above normal.  

The weather pattern was active during June and thunderstorms produced large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.  The periodic rainfall, heavy at times, also resulted in some flooding. 

• June 5 and 6:  Thunderstorms produced hail the size of golf balls and heavy rainfall in excess of two and three inches.   Click here for information on the large hail and heavy rain or here for additional rainfall totals. 
• June 6 (evening):  Thunderstorms redeveloped during the evening on June 6 and again produced hail the size of golf balls.  A three body scatter spike was observed on National Weather Service Doppler Radar (KUEX) .  Click here for information on the storms and radar signature.
  
• June 10-11:  Heavy rain of 1 to 4 inches fell across portions of south central Nebraska and north central Kansas, causing rises in rivers and lowland flooding.  Click here for the rainfall graphic and rainfall amounts.
• June 9-12: Heavy rain from June 9 through the 12th led to some significant rainfall totals.  Click here for the rain amounts.
• June 15 (morning):  Thunderstorms again produced heavy rain in excess of one and two inches and caused areas of flooding in poritons of north central Kasnas.   Click here for details on the rainfall amounts.
• June 15 (evening):  Severe thunderstorms developed and produced an EF0 tornado in Adams County, NE near Assumption.  The storms also produced hail the size of tennis balls.  Click here for details on the tornado and the severe weather reports. 
• June 17:  Two days after the tornado near Assumption, tornadoes again developed from a thunderstorm which developed in Buffalo county and tracked east during the evening.  An EF1 tornado occurred north of Gibbon, an EF0 tornado touched down in southern Grand Island, and an EF2 tornado occurred just west of Aurora, NE. 
• June 18-19:  Severe thunderstorms fired late in the evening on June 18th and continued into the early morning hours on June 19th.  The storms produced hail the size of golf balls, damaging winds in excess of 65 mph and heavy rainfall of 1 to 2 inches.  Click here for information on the severe weather and heavy rain reports.
