June 2009 Weather Summary

June of 2009 began with cool temperatures for the first half of the month at Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney, NE.  Temperatures rebounded during the latter half of June with readings returning to the 80s and 90s for highs.  The highest maximum temperatures for the month occurred on June 23rd where the high temperature reached 98 in Grand Island, 97 in Hastings, and 95 in Kearney.  Due to the cool first half of the month, overall monthly temperatures ranged from 1.3 to 1.6 degrees below normal for the tri-cities.   Rainfall occurrence was frequent at Grand Island and the airport received a total of 8.27 inches, which is 4.55 inches above normal.  Hastings precipitation totaled closer to normal with 3.95 inches falling, or 0.36 inch above normal.  

The weather pattern was active during June and thunderstorms produced large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.  The periodic rainfall, heavy at times, also resulted in some flooding.
