...WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME IT WAS THIS COLD?...

GIVEN THE UNUSUALLY SHARP ARCTIC BLAST THAT HAS TAKEN AIM UPON SOUTH
CENTRAL NEBRASKA AND NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS...SOME MAY BE WONDERING
HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN SINCE THE REGION LAST EXPERIENCED SUCH COLD
TEMPERATURES.

LISTED BELOW ARE A VARIETY OF COLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES FOR THREE
CHOSEN SITES ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA OR NORTH CENTRAL
KANSAS. FOR EACH SITE...THERE ARE DETAILS ABOUT DAILY MAXIMUM AND
MINIMUM TEMPERATURES...AND ALSO TWO-DAY AVERAGE TEMPERATURES.

TO OBTAIN A FAIRLY REASONABLE IDEA OF THE LAST TIME IT GOT THIS
COLD...A COMPARISON IS MADE BETWEEN THE FORECASTED OVERALL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE FOR TODAY AND FRIDAY...AND THE COLDEST TWO-DAY AVERAGE
TEMPERATURES ON RECORD.
THE RESULTS SHOW THAT:

FOR GRAND ISLAND AND HASTINGS...TODAY AND FRIDAY SHOULD BE THE COLDEST OVERALL  TWO DAYS
SINCE FEBRUARY 1996...OR NEARLY 14 YEARS AGO.   AT SMITH CENTER
KANSAS...TODAY AND FRIDAY ARE FORECAST TO BE THE OVERALL COLDEST
TWO DAYS SINCE DECEMBER 1989...OR JUST OVER 20 YEARS AGO.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THE ACTUAL RESULTS OF THIS COMPARISON ARE
DEPENDENT ON JUST HOW COLD TODAY AND FRIDAY ACTUALLY END UP
BEING...WHICH COULD BE A FEW DEGREES ABOVE OR BELOW CURRENTLY
FORECASTED VALUES.
