Locally Heavy Rainfall Totals April 13-16

A slow-moving frontal system lingering across south central Nebraska and north central Kansas resulted in several rounds of showers and thunderstorms between the evening of Tuesday, April 13th, and the early morning hours of Friday, April 16, 2010.

During this time, many areas in north central Kansas and south of I-80 in south central Nebraska picked up rainfall totals between 0.75" - 1.5". Locally higher totals over 2" were reported across portions of north central Kansas, most of which fell during the evening hours of Thursday, April 15th. On the 15th, heavy rainfall of over 2.5" fell during a 1-2 hour period in the Plainville, KS area, resulting in localized flooding. On the other end of the spectrum, most locations north of I-80 in the NWS Hastings coverage area reported rainfall amounts only around 0.6" or less during this multi-day period.

While most thunderstorms during this time were not severe, a few severe storms during the afternoon and evening hours of Wednesday, April 14, resulting in reports of hail to at least the size of pennies and nickels across portions of north central Kansas and far south central Nebraska.

  • Summarized in the tables and graphics below is a partial listing of rainfall totals from April 13-16, 2010. These reports are from a variety of sources, including NWS Cooperative Observers and automated systems at area airports and along rivers. A special thanks goes to the CoCoRaHS program and Nebraska Rainfall Assessment and Information Network (NeRAIN) for providing a wealth of precipitation information to the NWS.
  • Please note that the "Top 20" list only reflects rainfall totals accessible by NWS Hastings through "official" sources or via the Internet. It is likely that locally heavy rain also affected portions of the area from which gauge readings were not accessible or known.
