Locally Heavy Rainfall -- Sunday, May 30th

During the morning hours of Sunday, May 30, 2010, primarily between 1 AM-10 AM, widespread showers and thunderstorms migrated across south central Nebraska and north central Kansas from west to east. Somewhat out of character for late-May, NO severe weather occurred with this activity. However, many locations picked up locally heavy rainfall between 1-2 inches, mainly along and west of Highway 281.

As is typical with thunderstorm activity, rainfall totals varied considerably over short distances. For example, just in Adams County alone, the Hastings airport picked up 0.70" inches, while 15 miles to the west, an NeRAIN observer 2 miles west of Kenesaw recorded considerably more with 1.82".

  • Summarized below are a number of rainfall totals from several NWS products. As with the graphic above, these totals DO NOT necessarily include rain that fell after 7 AM on May 30th.  These reports are from a variety of sources, including NWS Cooperative Observers and automated systems at area airports. A special thanks goes to the CoCoRaHS program and Nebraska Rainfall Assessment and Information Network (NeRAIN) for providing a wealth of precipitation information to the NWS.
