August 3rd Isolated Severe Weather Recap

During the mid to late evening hours on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, a few isolated severe thunderstorms developed across western sections of south central Nebraska and north central Kansas. One storm was particularly severe, developing into a supercell in southeast Lincoln County, and sliding southeast across southwest Dawson County, northern Gosper County, and into Phelps County before weakening. This storm dropped a several-mile-long swath of quarter to golf ball size hail, with even larger hail up to baseball size pounding areas just north and east of Farnam in southwest Dawson County. Although no tornadoes were sighted with this storm, trained weather spotters did report a rotating wall cloud, prompting the first Tornado Warnings in over 6 weeks within the NWS Hastings coverage area.

Severe Weather:
Here are a few "highlights" of the event, based on reports from storm spotters, local law enforcement/emergency management, and the public:

  • Baseball ball size hail and estimated wind gusts to around 70 MPH, 4 miles north-northeast of Farnam Nebraska, starting at 838 PM
  • Ping pong ball size hail, 2 miles north of Bertrand in Phelps County at 1012 PM
  • Estimated 50 to 60 MPH winds near Cambridge Nebraska just after Midnight on Aug. 4th
