Strong Winds Across the Area, Jan. 7, 2011

A tight surface pressure gradient and increased mixing led to the development of strong northwesterly winds across the entire region Friday morning and afternoon, January 7, 2011. Most locations saw gusts over 40 mph, with a few sites topping out over 50 mph.  Below is a table with the peak wind gusts recorded through the day.  Please note: These peak wind gusts are from automated sensors (AWOS/ASOS) at airport sites.

 Kearney

45 mph at 11:55 a.m.

 Beloit

 45 mph at 11:39 a.m.

 Hebron

41 mph at 1:50 p.m.

Smith Center 

 41 mph at 12:10 p.m.

 Phillipsburg

 38 mph at 1:05 p.m.
