Storm Summary (Hail, Rain, Wind, Snow) -- April 14-15, 2011

A strong spring storm system impacted the Central and Southern Plains on Thursday, April 14th and Friday, April 15th, 2011,  bringing along the full gamut of weather - from large hail and tornadoes to blizzard conditions.  While the Southern Plains were mainly impacted by the severe weather Thursday afternoon, portions of the Hastings WFO coverage area also had to deal with reports of large hail and gusty winds from severe thunderstorms.  Beyond the thunderstorms, across both Nebraska and Kansas light to at times heavy rain fell across central and eastern areas, while portions of western Nebraska also saw the brunt of the snowfall, with a few locations reporting over 8" of snow.  In addition to the precipitation, a strong accompanying surface low pressure system sliding to the south then east through the area brought rapidly increasing winds, with sustained speeds of 30 to 45 mph, and gusts well over 50 mph for many locations, including a 61 mph gust at the Phillipsburg, KS Airport automated station. The strong winds combined with the falling snow resulted in blizzard conditions across portions of western Nebraska, leading to a temporary closure of Interstate 80, but the Hastings WFO coverage area was spared the heavy snow, with only a few inches falling across far western and northern areas.

Some reports may not be included, and amounts reflected on the map may not match locations exactly due to the effects of interpolation and "smoothing" used to create the maps. These preliminary data may contain errors.
