..APRIL 2011 CLIMATE REVIEW FOR SOUTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA AND PORTIONS OF NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS...

Listed below are a number of climate and weather highlights for the month of April 2011, with specific climate data focusing primarily on the South Central Nebraska Tri-Cities of Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney. All averages and "normals" based on 30-year data from 1971-2000.

TEMPERATURES...For most of South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas, the month as a whole ended up fairly unremarkable in terms of temperatures, with many observing sites checking in within 1.5 degrees of 30-year averages for the month when factoring in both the daily highs and lows. The Nebraska Tri-Cities of Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney all ended up within 0.8 degrees of average. In general, most of the area leaned toward the slightly-cooler-than-average side of things, including Smith Center KS at 1.7 degrees below average for the month, and Superior at 1.4 degrees below average. Breaking down the month, the first half was clearly the warmer half, highlighted by a particularly warm day on the 9th, when most of South Central Nebraska reached the upper 80s-low 90s, and much of North Central Kansas reached the low-mid 90s. Grand Island set a new record high that day with 89 degrees. In contrast, the latter half of the month featured somewhat cooler readings, highlighted by a pronounced 2-day chilly stretch on the 18th-19th when much of South Central Nebraska was held well down into the 40s. In the Tri-Cities, Grand Island and Kearney featured the warmest high of the month with 89 degrees on the 9th, while Kearney claimed the coldest low with 28 degrees on the 5th. Based on NWS Cooperative Observer reports across the entire NWS Hastings coverage area, a few of the extremes for the month included Smith Center KS with 94 degrees on the 9th, and Superior (4 miles east) with 24 degrees on the 5th. PRECIPITATION/SNOWFALL...In a welcome reversal from March, April 2011 featured above-average precipitation across most of South Central Nebraska, with many places checking in between 110-130% of normal for the month. The Hastings Airport ended up being one of the rainiest sites of all, measuring 4.34 inches for the month, or 151% of normal. This gave Hastings the 15th-wettest April on record out of 117 years. North Central Kansas portions of the NWS Hastings coverage area didn't fare quite as well, with most sites generally between 70-100% of normal. On the drier side of things, a few sites in Rooks County such as Palco and Damar only managed about 50% of typical April precipitation. In terms of U.S. Drought Monitor status through the end of April, much of South Central Nebraska was still depicted as "Abnormally Dry" despite the recent rainfall, with North Central Kansas ranging from "Abnormally Dry" to D1 category Moderate Drought.  (Please see listing farther down the page for more information on April 2011 precipitaton extremes across the area).

In terms of overall active weather, the most significant storm system of the month affected the region on the 14th-15th, bringing with it widespread rainfall and strong winds, along with severe thunderstorms and snow to parts of the area (see story link at top of page for more details).

Most of the NWS Hastings coverage area saw very little in the way of significant snowfall for the month, although places such as Central City, Ord and Osceola reported 3-4 inches for the month, most of which fell with the aforementioned strong low pressure system on the 15th.


SEVERE WEATHER...Overall, April 2011 was notably inactive in terms of severe hail, winds and tornadoes across the NWS Hastings coverage area. There were NO reported tornadoes, and the month only included ONE day of severe thunderstorms (Thursday April 14th). The severe storms on the 14th featured primarily hail of quarter to half-dollar size, mainly affecting North Central Kansas and extreme southern Nebraska. (see story link above)
