Severe Weather Event

Strong Winds and Hail Across Western Portions 
of South Central Nebraska

 Severe Weather Summary:

An upper level disturbance pushing out of the Rockies and onto the Plains, along with a weak surface boundary draped across southern Nebraska, sparked off another round of thunderstorms across portions of the Hastings CWA, some of which were on the strong to severe side.  The severe weather came in a short amount of time, mainly between 7 and 9 pm, with the area affected by the severe weather confined to Gosper, Phelps, and Franklin Counties of South Central Nebraska.  Wind gusts up to 70 MPH was the primary hazard, especially across Gosper County, though penny to quarter size hail was reported in Phelps and Franklin Counties. 

Here are the "highlights" of the event, based on reports from storm spotters, local law enforcement, emergency management, and the public:

  • Wind gusts estimated between 60 and 70 MPH were reported near Elwood
  • Wind gusts esimated at 65 MPH were reported 3 miles east of Eustis and 2 miles east of Smithfield   
  • Quarter size hail was reported 7 miles south of Holdrege 
  • Penny size hail was reported in Funk, 1 mile northeast of Holdrege and 8 miles south of Hildreth
  • Wind gusts estimated at 50 MPH were reported 6 miles southeast of Wilsonville
