Record-Cold Max Temperatures For Oct. 6th Set In Grand Island, Hastings

On Saturday, Oct. 6th, 2012, South Central Nebraska was mired in an unseasonably chilly airmass, and blanketed by thick clouds all day. Daytime high temperatures within most of the NWS Hastings coverage area only climbed between 40-49 degrees. Although most areas did not see precipitation, the western edges of the local area generally from Lexington southward toward Beaver City actually saw flurries or very light measurable snow accumulations. Not surprisingly, places such as Grand Island and Hastings realized their coldest maximum temperatures on record for the date. The Oct. 6, 2012, high temperature at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island was only 45 degrees. This broke the previous record-coldest high for the date of 46 degrees set 12 years ago in 2000. The "normal" Oct. 6th high temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 69 degrees. 

  • This was the coldest high temperature recorded on any day within the FIRST SIX DAYS of October since a reading of 44 degrees way back on Oct. 1, 1959
  • The coldest high temperature on record for any day in October was 21 degrees on Oct. 29, 1925

The Oct. 6, 2012 high temperature at Hastings Municipal Airport was only 43 degrees. This broke the previous record-coldest high for the date of 45 degrees set 12 years ago in 2000. The "normal" Oct. 6th high temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 69 degrees.
