2012 Was The Driest Year on Record at Grand Island, NE!

Although all of South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas experienced a very dry, drought-stricken 2012, parts of the area actually recorded their outright-driest calendar year on record. In term of official precipitation data sites within the area, Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island was one of the most notable locations to achieve this dubious distinction.

Following is a ranking of the Top-5 driest calendar years on record at Grand Island, where complete calendar year precipitation records date back 116 years to 1896. As a reference point, "normal" annual precipitation at Grand Island based on official NCDC 30-year normals is 26.66 inches, which puts the 2012 total 15.11" below normal. In sharp contrast, the wettest year on record was 1905 with 45.50".
