April 22-23, 2013: Record Cold Temperatures Tied or Broken in Grand Island and Hastings

April 22-23, 2013, marked the latest stretch of cold weather in what had been an overall chilly month across the NWS Hastings coverage area. During this time frame, a storm system brought widespread rain to the area, and even accumulating snow to parts of North Central Kansas, along with primarily Valley and Greeley counties in South Central Nebraska. On both the 22nd and 23rd, Grand Island either set or tied a record cold high temperature, marking the third and fourth times this occurred during the month. In addition, Hastings set a record low temperature on the 23rd. The details follow below...


The April 22, 2013, high temperature at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island was only 43°. This broke the previous record-cold high temperatures for the date of 44° set in 1944 and 1912. The "normal" April 22nd high temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 66°.   On April 23, the high temperature only reached 37°.  This tied the previous record-cold high temperature for the date of 37° set in 1956. The "normal" high temperature for April 23rd is also 66°.

  • The coldest high temperature on record for any day in April was 19° on April 2, 1936.

The April 23, 2013, low temperature at the Hastings Municipal Airport dropped to 26°. This broke the previous record low temperature for the date of 27° set in 1909. The "normal" April 23rd low temperature based on 30-year climate normals is 41°. 

  • The coldest low temperature on record for any day in April was 5° on April 3, 1936.
