May 1, 2013: First Measurable May Snow in Grand Island Since 1967!

The start of May ushered in continued cool conditions across the NWS Hastings coverage area, as an upper level storm system passed through the Central Plains.  The air mass accompanying this storm system was cold enough to support snow, with many locations recording measurable snowfall, primarily across south central Nebraska.  The snowfall recorded in Grand Island for May 1, 2013, was 0.7".  This was enough to break the daily snowfall record, which had been just a trace recorded in 1994. More notably, this was the first measurable May snow in Grand Island since 4.3" on May 3, 1967...46 years ago!

May snowfall records at Grand Island date back to 1895.
