May 14, 2013: EARLIEST-EVER 100+ Degrees On Record in Grand Island

In sharp contrast to what had been a chilly start to the month, a very hot airmass surged into the  NWS Hastings coverage area of South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas on Tuesday, May 14th, 2013, with most places soaring to somewhere between 95-103°. At Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island, this not only set a new daily record for May 14th, but more notably, it set a new record for the year's earliest 100+ degree high temperature on record, besting the previous mark of May 20, 1925, by six days! Furthermore, the 102° high on the 14th ranked as the 3rd-hottest temperature on record for any May day in Grand Island. May temperature records at Grand Island date back 118 years to 1896. The details follow in the tables below...
