...JUNE 2013 NARRATIVE FOR CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT...

JUNE 2013 FEATURED A SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL MEAN TEMPERATURE...BUT
UNFORTUNATELY FROM A DROUGHT PERSPECTIVE WILL BE MOST REMEMBERED FOR
USHERING BACK IN A RATHER DRY WEATHER PATTERN FOLLOWING A FAIRLY WET
APRIL AND MAY.
ALTHOUGH PRECIPITATION ENDED UP WELL BELOW
NORMAL...THE U.S. DROUGHT MONITOR MAINTAINED THE IMMEDIATE GRAND
ISLAND AREA IN CATEGORY D1 MODERATE DROUGHT THROUGHOUT THE MONTH.

FOCUSING ON PRECIPITATION IN MORE DETAIL...THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF 1.63
INCHES AT CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT WAS ONLY 38 PERCENT OF
THE JUNE NORMAL OF 4.30 INCHES. THIS RANKED AS THE 18TH-DRIEST JUNE
ON RECORD OUT OF 118 YEARS...ALTHOUGH IT WAS NOT QUITE AS DRY AS
LAST YEAR IN 2012 WHICH ONLY MEASURED 1.27 INCHES.
THE WETTEST
CALENDAR DAY OF THE MONTH WAS 0.56 INCHES ON THE 23RD...AND THE
MAJORITY OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH...1.25 INCHES...FELL DURING A
THREE-DAY STRETCH FROM THE 22ND-24TH.

TEMPERATURE-WISE...THE MONTHLY MEAN TEMPERATURE RESULTING FROM
AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS AND LOWS WAS 72.6 DEGREES...OR 1.3 DEGREES
ABOVE THE JUNE NORMAL. OF THE 30 DAYS DURING THE MONTH...18 FEATURED
AN ABOVE NORMAL MEAN TEMPERATURE AND 12 DAYS WERE BELOW NORMAL. BY
FAR THE COOLEST STRETCH OF THE MONTH OCCURRED EARLY-ON...AS EIGHT OF
THE FIRST NINE DAYS FEATURED A BELOW NORMAL MEAN
TEMPERATURE...HIGHLIGHTED BY A HIGH OF ONLY 63 DEGREES ON THE
1ST...AND A LOW OF 44 ON THE 2ND. AFTER THE 9TH...ONLY THREE DAYS
AVERAGED BELOW NORMAL...AS A SEASONABLY WARM STRETCH ENSUED WITH
DAILY HIGHS MAINLY BETWEEN THE UPPER-80S AND MID-90S...AND OVERNIGHT
LOWS GENERALLY BETWEEN THE UPPER-50S AND MID-60S. THE TWO HOTTEST
DAYS OF THE MONTH...THE 14TH AND 21ST...BOTH REACHED 100 DEGREES.
THE MILDEST LOW TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH...72 DEGREES...OCCURRED ON
BOTH THE 11TH AND 27TH. THE OVERALL-WARMEST WEEK OF THE MONTH
OCCURRED BETWEEN THE 20TH-26TH...AS DAILY HIGHS REACHED AT LEAST 87
DEGREES ON SIX OF THE SEVEN DAYS.

REGARDING SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS...OVERALL IT WAS A FAIRLY INACTIVE
MONTH WITHIN THE CITY OF GRAND ISLAND. IN TERMS OF WIND DAMAGE...THE
MOST NOTABLE EVENT TOOK PLACE BEFORE SUNRISE ON THE 11TH...WHEN A
BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION WAS BLOWN DOWN BY STRONG...ERRATIC WINDS
ASSOCIATED WITH A HEAT BURST. HOWEVER...THESE DAMAGING WINDS WERE
FAIRLY LOCALIZED AND DID NOT AFFECT THE ENTIRE CITY. AT THE REGIONAL
AIRPORT...THE STRONGEST THUNDERSTORM WIND GUST OF THE MONTH WAS ONLY
54 MPH FROM THE WEST ON THE EVENING OF THE 14TH. ALTHOUGH NO HAIL
