...AUGUST 2013 NARRATIVE FOR CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT...

DESPITE BEING THE WETTEST MONTH SINCE MAY...PRECIPITATION FELL JUST
SHORT OF NORMAL...MARKING THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE MONTH OF BELOW
NORMAL PRECIPITATION. TEMPERATURE-WISE...IT WAS ANOTHER MONTH OF
RATHER SHARP CONTRASTS...AVERAGING FAIRLY COOL THROUGH THE FIRST
HALF BEFORE ENDING WITH THE HOTTEST WEEK OF THE SUMMER BASED ON
AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURES. ACCORDING THE U.S. DROUGHT
MONITOR...THE MAJORITY OF HALL COUNTY REMAINED IN CATEGORY D1
MODERATE DROUGHT THROUGHOUT THE MONTH.

PRECIPITATION-WISE...THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF 3.02 INCHES AT CENTRAL
NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT WAS MERELY 0.10 INCHES SHY OF THE AUGUST
NORMAL.  SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT OF THIS RAIN FELL DURING THE FIRST
HALF OF THE MONTH...HIGHLIGHTED BY 1.04 INCHES ON THE 11TH.  DURING
A FIVE-DAY STRETCH FROM THE 11TH-15TH...MEASURABLE RAIN WAS RECORDED
ON EACH DAY EXCEPT THE 12TH WHICH HAD A TRACE.

TEMPERATURE-WISE...MUCH LIKE JULY IT WAS ANOTHER ROLLER COASTER
RIDE...EXCEPT THIS TIME AROUND THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH WAS THE
COOL STRETCH AND THE SECOND HALF NOTABLY HOTTER.  OVERALL...THE
MONTHLY MEAN TEMPERATURES RESULTING FROM AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS
AND LOWS WAS 75.9 DEGREES...1.9 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL.  OF THE 31
DAYS DURING AUGUST...17 HAD AN ABOVE NORMAL MEAN TEMPERATURE...13
FINISHED BELOW NORMAL AND ONE TIED THE DAILY NORMAL.  BREAKING DOWN
THE EXTREMES IN MORE DETAIL...13 OF THE FIRST 18 DAYS OF AUGUST HAD
A BELOW NORMAL MEAN TEMPERATURE...HIGHLIGHTED BY THE 16TH WHICH ONLY
REACHED 70 DEGREES...SETTING A NEW DAILY RECORD FOR THE COOLEST
MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE.  THIS OCCURRED DURING THE OVERALL-COOLEST WEEK
OF THE MONTH...CENTERED FROM THE 12TH-18TH. IN FACT...THE FIRST 19
DAYS OF THE MONTH FAILED TO REACH 90 DEGREES. WHEN COMBINED WITH THE
FINAL NINE DAYS OF JULY...THIS RESULTED IN A NOTABLE 28-DAY STREAK
WITHOUT REACHING 90 DEGREES. WHEN ONLY CONSIDERING SUB-90 DEGREE
STREAKS CONFINED TO THE MONTHS OF JULY AND/OR AUGUST...THIS FINISHED
AS THE 5TH-LONGEST ON RECORD DATING BACK 117 YEARS...AND THE LONGEST
SINCE A 29-DAY STREAK FROM JULY 2-30, 1994.
  THE COOLEST LOW
TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH...60 DEGREES...OCCURRED ON BOTH THE 14TH
AND 18TH.  EVENTUALLY...THE COOL STRETCH THAT DEFINED THE FIRST 2+
WEEKS OF THE MONTH ENDED WITH AUTHORITY...AS EACH OF THE FINAL 13
DAYS OF THE MONTH FEATURED AN ABOVE NORMAL MEAN TEMPERATURE...AND 10
OF THE FINAL 12 DAYS OF THE MONTH REACHED AT LEAST 90 DEGREES. THE
HEAT REALLY PEAKED DURING THE FINAL EIGHT DAYS OF THE MONTH...AS
HIGH TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM 93-97 ON EACH DAY BETWEEN THE
24TH-31ST...LED BY 97 ON THE 27TH. THE 26TH FEATURED THE WARMEST LOW
TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WITH 75 DEGREES.  IN TERMS OF AVERAGE DAILY
HIGH TEMPERATURE...THE 7-DAY STRETCH BETWEEN THE 25TH-31ST WAS IN
FACT THE HOTTEST WEEK OF SUMMER 2013...AVERAGING 95.1 DEGREES.  MORE
SIGNIFICANTLY...WHEN CONSIDERING THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN
TEMPERATURE...THE FINAL EIGHT DAYS OF AUGUST AVERAGED 83.2
DEGREES...FALLING JUST SHORT OF THE RECORD-WARMEST FINAL EIGHT DAYS
OF AUGUST...WHICH WAS SET IN 1937 WITH A DAILY MEAN OF 83.3 DEGREES.

TURNING TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS...THE ONLY AUGUST SEVERE WEATHER IN
THE IMMEDIATE GRAND ISLAND AREA OCCURRED RIGHT AWAY ON THE EVENING

...SUMMER 2013 SEASONAL RECAP COVERING JUNE-AUGUST...

AVERAGE MEAN TEMPERATURE:  75.0 DEGREES (1.2 ABOVE NORMAL)
SEASONAL PRECIPITATION:    6.04 INCHES (4.78 BELOW NORMAL)

FOR THE METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER SEASON OF JUNE...JULY AND AUGUST AS A
WHOLE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE WAS 75.0 DEGREES...OR 1.2
DEGREES ABOVE THE SEASONAL NORMAL OF 73.8 DEGREES. THIS TIED SUMMER
2013 WITH 1959 FOR THE 47TH-HOTTEST SUMMER ON RECORD OUT OF 118
YEARS DATING BACK TO 1896.  HOWEVER...THIS SUMMER WAS NOT NEARLY AS
HOT AS ONE YEAR AGO...WHEN SUMMER 2012 AVERAGED 77.7 DEGREES AND WAS
THE 8TH-HOTTEST ON RECORD.  OF THE 92 DAYS DURING SUMMER
2013...GRAND ISLAND REACHED AT LEAST 90 DEGREES ON 32 DAYS (COMPARED
TO 55 IN 2012) AND REACHED AT LEAST 100 DEGREES ONLY TWICE (COMPARED
TO 10 IN 2012).
DESPITE PLENTY OF VARIABILITY IN TEMPERATURE
PATTERNS EVERY FEW WEEKS...NONE OF THE THREE CALENDAR MONTHS DURING
SUMMER 2013 STOOD OUT WITH NOTABLE EXTREMES...AS JUNE...JULY AND
AUGUST FINISHED 1.3...0.1 AND 1.9 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL...RESPECTIVELY.  THE HOTTEST HIGH TEMPERATURE OF SUMMER 2013
WAS 100 DEGREES ON JUNE 14TH AND 21ST...AND THE COOLEST HIGH
TEMPERATURE WAS 63 DEGREES RIGHT AWAY ON JUNE 1ST.  THE COOLEST LOW
TEMPERATURE OF THE SEASON WAS 44 DEGREES ON JUNE 2ND...AND THE
MILDEST LOW WAS 77 DEGREES ON JULY 13TH.  IN TERMS OF AVERAGE DAILY
MEAN TEMPERATURE...THE HOTTEST WEEK OF THE SUMMER WAS AUGUST
24TH-30TH...AND THE COOLEST WEEK WAS JUNE 1ST-7TH.

TURNING TO PRECIPITATION...THE SEASONAL TOTAL WAS 6.04 INCHES AT
CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT WAS 4.78 INCHES SHORT OF (AND ONLY
56 PERCENT OF) THE NORMAL AMOUNT OF 10.82 INCHES.  THIS RESULTED IN
THE 18TH-DRIEST SUMMER ON RECORD OUT OF 118 YEARS DATING TO 1896.

IRONICALLY...THIS FOLLOWED ON THE HEELS OF WHAT WAS THE 17TH-WETTEST
SPRING SEASON ON RECORD FROM MARCH-MAY. DESPITE THIS DUBIOUS DRYING
TREND...SUMMER 2013 WAS NOT NEARLY AS DRY AS THE RECORD-SETTING DRY
SUMMER ONE YEAR AGO IN 2012...WHICH ONLY TOTALED 2.37 INCHES.  THE
WETTEST CALENDER DAY DURING SUMMER 2013 WAS AUGUST 11TH WITH 1.04
INCHES.  THIS SUMMER (JUNE-AUGUST) MARKED THE THIRD IN A ROW THAT
FAILED TO PRODUCE A 2-DAY RAINFALL TOTAL OF AT LEAST 2 INCHES IN
GRAND ISLAND...AS THIS LAST OCCURRED ON AUGUST 16TH-17TH,
2010...WHEN 2.76 INCHES FELL.

71 DEGREES...SETTING A NEW DAILY RECORD FOR THE COOLEST MAXIMUM
TEMPERATURE. THIS OCCURRED DURING THE OVERALL-COOLEST WEEK OF THE
MONTH...CENTERED FROM THE 12TH-18TH. IN FACT...THE FIRST 20 DAYS OF
THE MONTH FAILED TO REACH 90 DEGREES. WHEN COMBINED WITH THE FINAL
NINE DAYS OF JULY...THIS RESULTED IN A REMARKABLE 29-DAY STREAK
WITHOUT REACHING 90 DEGREES. WHEN ONLY CONSIDERING SUB-90 DEGREE

...SUMMER 2013 SEASONAL RECAP COVERING JUNE-AUGUST...

AVERAGE MEAN TEMPERATURE:  74.0 DEGREES (0.4 BELOW NORMAL)
TOTAL SEASONAL PRECIPITATION: 6.26 INCHES (4.58 BELOW NORMAL)

FOR THE METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER SEASON OF JUNE...JULY AND AUGUST AS A
WHOLE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE WAS 74.0 DEGREES..OR 0.4
DEGREES BELOW THE SEASON NORMAL OF 74.4 DEGREES. THIS TIED SUMMER

TO REACH 100 DEGREES AT LEAST ONCE.
DESPITE PLENTY OF VARIABILITY IN
TEMPERATURE PATTERNS EVERY FEW WEEKS...NONE OF THE 3 CALENDER MONTHS
DURING SUMMER 2013 STOOD OUT WITH NOTABLE EXTREMES...AS JUNE AND

TURNING TO PRECIPITATION...THE SEASONAL TOTAL OF 6.26 INCHES AT
HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS 4.58 INCHES SHORT OF (AND ONLY 58
PERCENT OF) THE NORMAL AMOUNT OF 10.84 INCHES.  THIS RESULTED IN THE
17TH-DRIEST SUMMER ON RECORD OUT OF 118 YEARS DATING TO 1896. IT
MIGHT COME AS A SURPRISE THAT SUMMER 2013 WAS ACTUALLY SLIGHTLY
DRIER THAN ONE YEAR AGO IN SUMMER 2012...WHICH TOTALED 6.38 INCHES.
THE WETTEST CALENDER DAY DURING SUMMER 2013 WAS AUGUST 1ST WITH 0.97
