Oct. 3. 2013: Hastings Sets All-Time October Daily Rainfall Record!

A complex of thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall started out north of Interstate 80 during the afternoon and early evening of Oct. 2, 2013, before sagging southward through the majority of South Central Nebraska during the late evening and into the early morning hours of Oct. 3. As a result, the official rain gauges at both Grand Island and Hastings set daily rainfall records for either the 2nd or 3rd. More significantly, Hastings set a new daily rainfall record for ANY day in October! See below for details specifically for Grand Island and Hastings, and check out this story for a broader overview of heavy rainfall that affected much of the NWS Hastings coverage area...

The Oct. 3, 2013, rainfall total at Hastings Municipal Airport was 3.49". The 2-day total from Oct. 2-3 was 4.13", with all of this rain falling between 11pm on the 2nd and 6am on the 3rd.

  • The total of 3.49" on the 3rd shattered the previous record for the date of 0.98" in 1910
