Lightning Safety Awareness Week, June 21-27

The 2009 National Lightning Safety Awareness Week will be June 21-27.
This year's theme is, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"

Daily statements will be issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), providing information on lightning as well as numerous safety tips.  You can find the information that will be provided on those daily statements at the NWS Lightning Safety Awareness website including:
Lightning Science
Outdoor Lightning Safety
Indoor Lightning Safety
Medical Aspects of Lightning Victims
Historical Aspects of Lightning

We had 28 fatalities in the United States in 2008.  Although that was the least number of lightning fatalities in about three decades, we would still like to see that number reduced to zero.  But realistically, our goal is to educate people to make the right decisions to avoid becoming a lightning statistic.  And nowhere is that more important than in Colorado where we tied with Florida in 2006 and 2008 for the most number of lightning fatalities of any state.  We also had 10 documented lightning victims within Colorado in 2008 who survived.
