Wintery Mix of Precipitation Returns

to Tri State Area 2/23/08

     A large upper level low pressure system moved across the area during the day Saturday. As this system moved across Kansas,  a narrow area of prcipitation developed across the Tri State area bringing a periods of light rain, light snow and sleet to the area. Precipitation was generally confined to a narrow band that remained just north of the upper level low, as can be seen on the following visible satellite and radar images.

     Precipitation amunts across the Tri State Area were generally light and ranged from a trace to 0.18 inches of liquid at Oberlin. Snowfall amounts were generally only trace amounts, although 2 inches of snow was reported at Flagler. Heavier snow also fell to the east of the Tri State Area, where Hayes reported 4 inches. The spotty nature of the snowfall showed up well on the following visible satellite image taken at 9 am MST on 2/24/08.
