Severe Weather May 22-23, 2008

 severe weather outbreak

A large, nearly stationary, upper level low resulted in a surface low pressure system and associated warm front remaining over the region for a prolonged period of time. As a result, the Tri-State Region had not one, but two consecutive days of tornadoes and widespread severe weather. Over the two day period from May 22 to 23, there were 15 tornadoes, 35 reports of hail one inch or larger, and several reports of flooding and flash flooding. There were more tornadoes over this two day period that the region normally has in an entire year (the average annual tornado count for the Goodland County Warning Area is 13). The strongest tornado was rated an EF4 and occured 3 miles to the southwest of Quinter Kansas. This was the first EF4 tornado in the Tri State area since June 15 1990.
