Record Tornado Year For Tri-State Area

Record Tornado Year For Tri-State Area

The 2007 severe weather season continued the active weather pattern established last December and January when heavy snow and ice crippled the area. The severe weather season began in late March, about four weeks earlier than usual, and brought a large number of long-lived tornadoes. Thirty five tornadoes were recorded in a 4-week period from late March through late April. That is impressive in itself, but when that number is compared to the average annual number of tornadoes in the Tri-State region, 12, the numbers become even more staggering. The month of May contributed another 8 tornadoes to the total.

Although June was relatively quiet in terms of tornado numbers (one reported June 19), the following month of July more than offset the low June total. In fact, July 3 will go down as one of the more significant tornado days of 2007. A total of ten tornadoes occurred across Kit Carson county on that afternoon. Fortunately most occurred over rural areas with minimal damage. Four days in 2007 are responsible for 43 of the 54 tornadoes, or about 80% of the total. These dates are listed below, along with the number of tornadoes occurring each day:

March 28 ... 16
April 23 .... 8
April 24 .... 9
July 3 ..... 10

These dates now rank in the top ten for days with large numbers of tornadoes. Reliable records for tornadoes date back to 1950.

The map below shows the locations of initial tornado development for all 54 tornadoes. A few tornadoes were in very close proximity, and do not display as a distinct dot on the map. The complete paths are not shown, only the initial locations. Many tornadoes had path lengths of 5 to 15 miles. The map is color coded to highlight the four main tornado days (see legend). The numbers indicate the tornadoes which ultimately received an Enhanced Fujita Scale rating of EF1 and EF2.

The list below gives some details about the 54 tornadoes which have occurred. EF is the Enhanced Fujita Scale rating (0-weak, 5-violent). All times are Mountain Daylight Time.

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GOODLAND KS
300 PM MDT THU JUL 12 2007

...2007 IS A RECORD-BREAKER FOR NUMBER OF TORNADOES IN THE TRI-STATE AREA...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) OFFICE IN GOODLAND HAS LOGGED 54 TORNADOES IN ITS 19 COUNTY WARNING AREA SINCE JANUARY 1. THIS NUMBER FAR EXCEEDS THE PREVIOUS CALENDAR YEAR RECORD OF 42 TORNADOES...WHICH OCCURRED IN 1994. IN AN AVERAGE YEAR...ABOUT 12 TORNADOES OCCUR IN THE AREA. THE GOODLAND OFFICE SERVES 13 COUNTIES IN NORTHWEST KANSAS...THREE IN EASTERN COLORADO AND THREE IN SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA. ALTHOUGH TORNADO RECORDS DATE BACK TO THE LATE 1800S...MORE RELIABLE RECORDS START IN 1950 WHEN A NATIONWIDE EFFORT TO KEEP ACCURATE TORNADO STATISTICS BEGAN.

HERE IS A LIST OF 2007 TORNADO DATES...AND THE NUMBER OF TORNADOES OCCURRING EACH DAY

MARCH 24....1
MARCH 28...16
APRIL 21....1
APRIL 23....8
APRIL 24....9
MAY 14......1
MAY 22......5
MAY 29......2
JUNE 19.....1
JULY 3.....10

THANKFULLY...NO FATALITIES OR INJURIES HAVE OCCURRED EVEN THOUGH A RECORD NUMBER OF TORNADOES HAVE BEEN REPORTED.

IT IS ALSO NOTEWORTHY THAT SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRING ON MARCH 28 2007 RESULTED IN 16 TORNADOES WHICH IS THE MOST EVER RECORDED IN A SINGLE DAY IN THE TRI-STATE AREA...AND THE MOST OCCURRING IN THE MONTH OF MARCH. IN ADDITION...2007 NOW CLAIMS 4 OF THE TOP 9 DATES FOR NUMBER OF TORNADOES.

HERE IS A LIST OF THE AREA TOP TORNADO PRODUCING DATES FROM 1950 TO 2007...

MARCH 28 2007.....16 **
OCTOBER 31 2000...13
JULY 3 2007.......10 **
JUNE 1 2003.......10
APRIL 24 2007......9 **
JUNE 12 1983.......9
JULY 9 1993........9
APRIL 23 2007......8 **
JUNE 7 1992........8

THE ENHANCED FUJITA (EF) SCALE RANKS TORNADOES BASED ON THE DAMAGE PRODUCED...WITH EF5 BEING THE STRONGEST AND EF0 BEING THE WEAKEST. THE LIST BELOW IS A BREAKDOWN OF TORNADO RATINGS FOR THE TRI-STATE AREA IN 2007. ONE REASON FOR THE LARGE NUMBER OF EF0 TORNADOES IS THAT OUR AREA HAS A VAST AMOUNT OF OPEN FARMLAND AND PASTURELAND AND A VERY LOW DENSITY OF HOMES AND FARMSTEADS. TORNADOES WHICH DO NOT PRODUCE DAMAGE ARE GIVEN A RATING OF EF0.

EF2....1  (BIRD CITY TORNADO ON MARCH 28)
EF1....9  (3 ON MARCH 28, 4 ON APRIL 24, 2 ON OTHER DATES)
EF0...44

NATIONALLY...THE PRELIMINARY 2007 TORNADO COUNT STANDS AT OVER 1000...HOWEVER THIS NUMBER IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS DAMAGE SURVEYS ARE COMPLETED AND FINAL REPORTS ARE ISSUED. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE HAVE BEEN 73 TORNADO FATALITIES SO FAR IN 2007, WHICH EXCEEDS THE 10-YEAR AVERAGE OF 62.
