Fifth Coldest December on Record Projected for Goodland

Cold and Wet December Observed in Goodland, KS

During the month of December two winter storms impacted the region, bringing snow and cold air to the tri-state area. There were two days in Goodland when the maximum temperature was 10 ºF or lower and 15 days when the maximum temperature was projected to remain below freezing (32 ºF). The low temperature fell to -12 ºF on the ninth of December followed by -9 ºF on the tenth.  The month of December 2009 in Goodland is projected to rank as the fifth coldest December since records began in 1850.  Below is a graph summarizing temperatures in Goodland through December 26, 2009 followed by a table of the top ten coldest Decembers since records began in 1850.

In addition to the cold, the National Weather Service in Goodland recorded 12.2 inches of snow through December 26, 2009. This ranks as the twelfth highest total snowfall for the month of December since records began in 1850.
