Wind Events

Another round of strong  northwest winds occurred this afternoon throughout the Tri-State region. A strong jet streak (fastest moving winds within a jet stream) moved over Kansas as it was rotating around an area of low pressure moving through the Midwest and an upper trough of low pressure over the eastern United States. These fast winds combined with daytime warming allowed high wind speeds within lower to middle layers of the atmosphere to mix down to the surface during the late morning and early afternoon hours.  A wind advisory was issued today for the entireTri-State region as northwest winds gusting up to 57 mph occurred during the late morning into the afternoon. Visibility in Goodland, KS was reduced to 4 miles during the afternoon due to blowing dust. However, no traffic accidents resulted from blowing dust due to today's event. A red flag warning was also issued today for portions of the Tri-State region. A grass fire 10 miles south of Oakley, KS occurred during the afternoon due to the strong winds and low relative humidity. The high wind warning event on Thursday was much more critical than today's event since it resulted in a multiple vehicle accident with fatalities, but wind advisories should never be ignored as they still threaten life and  property and can be upgraded to a warning at any time. Here is a table to show the wind speeds during both today's and Thursday's event:
