New Upper Air Observation System Installed in Green Bay

The NWS Green Bay upper air observation system is being upgraded.  The previous system, known as MicroArt, was replaced by the Radiosonde Replacement System (RRS).  The previous system used a radiosonde that transmitted a radio signal for tracking purposes.  The new RRS instrument is tracked via global positioning satellites and will provide more accurate and higher resolution vertical atmospheric data.

The decommissioning of the MicroArt system occurred on October 2.  Testing of the new system will continue through mid October.  The first official balloon launch using the new system is scheduled for October 14.

Below is a picture of the work being performed on October 7.  The base of the new antenna was being installed in the dome above the inflation building.
