Radar Detects Smoke from Brush Fire

A brush fire, fanned by strong southwest winds, shut down a stretch of Interstate 43 just northwest of the city of Green Bay on May 20.  The National Weather Service Doppler radar in Ashwaubenon detected the plume of smoke shortly after 5 pm.

In the animation below, a small but intense echo is first seen at 5:11 pm northeast of the radar (KGRB) and northwest of downtown Green Bay.  The plume rapidly moves northeast, fanned by southwesterly winds of 30 to 40 mph.  The animation starts at 5:11 pm and ends at 5:31 pm.
