Remaining Snow and Ice Satellite Image March17

Below is a MODIS satellite image from the afternoon of March 17th. The polar orbiting satellite passed very close to Lake Michigan today which resulted in a clear image of the remaining snow cover which is located across Western Lower Michigan, in the typical lake effect snow belts. The snow cover inland has melted away. Ice remains on Lake Michigan, but the strong north and northwest winds of the past 24 hours (March 16th and 17th) has eroded it some. Remember lake ice is never safe and this time of year as it is moving and melting it is even more dangerous.
