On Track for the Coldest July on Record

Grand Rapids remains on track to break the all time record for the coldest July since records started in 1892.  As of the 28th, the mean temperature at Grand Rapids for July was 67.0 degrees. Using our forecast temperatures for the rest of the month, our mean would end the month at 67.1 degrees, which would break the all time record of 67.2 degrees set in 1992 by one tenths of a degree.

Not only is this July on track to break the record for the coldest July on record at Grand Rapids, but with highest temperature for the month of July so far being 84 degrees, that would also be the new record for the coldest maximum July temperature on record.  Currently 85 degrees in 2000 holds the record for the coldest maximum temperature for July.

At Lansing, the daily mean temperature  through the 28th was 66.5 degrees. That is currently in 7th place for the coldest July on record.  First place for the coldest July on record in Lansing  occurred in 1865 with a mean of 64.2 degrees.  Using our forecast temperatures for the rest of the month, Lansing's mean would come out to about 66.7 degrees.  That would put Lansing in a tie with July 2000 for seventh place.  The coldest July in Lansing was in 1863 with a  mean of 66.5 degrees.

The maximum temperature for the month of July in Lansing, to date, is 84 degrees.  Lansing's record coldest maximum July high temperature is currently 85 degress set in both 1863 and 1907.  If the 84 degrees stands through Friday, then 2009's 84 degrees will be become the new record coldest maximum temperature in July at Lansing.

Muskegon's daily mean temperature through the 28th was 65.7 degrees.  That puts Muskegon in fourth place through the 28th behind the 63.6 degree mean set in 1924, which is in first place. Using our current forecast temperatures, Muskegon's mean at the end of the month would be 65.8 degrees.  That would put July 2009 in fourth place for the coldest July on record with 1924 still in first place at 64.2 degrees.

Muskegon's high of 83 degrees for the month, set on the 9th, would not put Muskegon in first place for the coldest maximum July temperature since Muskegon's 82 degrees in 1938 would remain in first place.
