One of the Coldest Starts for October

This has been an usually cold start to the month of October.  At Grand Rapids, the daily temperature has been below  normal on every day through the 18th. Looking back at our records to 1892, this is the first time this has ever happened.  Through the 18th of October,  most of Southwest Lower Michigan is averaging between 5 and 9 degrees colder than normal (see Fig. 1).  For many of our long term climate stations this has been one of the top 10 coldest on record.

Warmer air is expected to remain in place until Thursday afternoon when a cold front is expected to come through.  Once it comes through colder weather is expected to remain through the end of October.  Today is expected to be the last day with highs in the 60s this month.  For Grand Rapids, 1917, 1925, 1952, 1974 and 1987 were also on the list for the top ten coldest through the entire month.  If our forecast is correct and the cold air come in Thursday and remains in place into the end of the month, 2009 may well stay on that list too.
